Welcome to Bear River Vineyards!
As new owners, we are excited to carry on the tradition of wine making that is part of the history of our vineyard and of the Village of Bear River itself. The first vines in Nova Scotia were planted right here in Bear River in 1611 by the French Apothecary Louis Hebert. He recognized the warm and sheltered microclimate unique to Bear River was ideal for grapes. Almost four centuries later the original founder of our vineyard, Chris Hawes, recognized that was still the case and planted vinifera not previously grown in Nova Scotia such as Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris, and Merlot. Today our small vineyard is a mix of these tender varietals growing alongside other vinifera and hardier hybrids.
We embrace the responsibility we have been given to continue to care for these noble vines while preparing for the opportunity to expand by replanting the vacant sections of the vineyard.
We invite you to join us at Bear River Vineyards to experience the history that has shaped our beautiful property and to share in our anticipation of watching it grow into the future.
